In about the last dozen years what in the Santa Barbara area has improved?

No one here is saying anything positive about the tourist industry and how good it is to halve to live next to an VRBO ,or the floating turds that bring a bitty bit of taxes in a city that has a budget bigger than some counties. Think about it.

I want to say that the MTD bus service improved—and it did. But then it got worse again due to Covid. Reduced ridership, reduced funds and lack of drivers has led to reduced service and discontinued lines. Maybe things will improve again. The fancy multiuse pedestrian/bike path along Modoc and Las Positas must have cost a fortune, but it is a great infrastructure improvement that will benefit many people for decades to come. The roundabout at Cliff Drive and Las Positas seems like a good thing.

I do like the roundabout!! Oh and Sprouts and Trader Joe's but quality of life in SB has deteriorated with such an increase in cost of loving, downtown rental rates resulting in beloved shops and restaurants closing, increasing homelessness, more frequent fires, bad water.... growing up here the city felt cleaner, safer, fun and special.

Positives: they got rid of the stoplights, widened the freeway through Goleta, built Camino Real, built the desal plant (twice!), improved sewage treatment, built and/or upgraded several bikepaths, got rid of the Summerland oil rigs, and closed State St. to cars. Negatives: Homelessness is way, way up, downtown retail is on the ropes, the freeway still sucks through Montecito, and Jasper's is gone.

Jasper's.....OMG....would always order their sizzling mushroom appetizer platter...drenched in garlic and hand-drawn butter....so good...so delicious....so forbidden....oh, the memories we have of these places that no longer exist! What I'd give to have a Helm's bakery truck pull up, and have the driver open them double doors, then pull out that long drawer that had a squadron of choco-covered dreamy creampuffffffffs lined up with military precesion ("I"d like twelve, please!")

Nearly every aspect of life has improved in my 50 years here in town. Sure, things are dramatically more expensive, but at the same time, many things are orders of magnitude cheaper than when I was a child. The air is cleaner, the water is cleaner and I wake up every day thankful to live here.

I think the expansion of the 101 freeway between Santa Barbara and Ventura is the greatest achievement of the past 12 years, although I must concede the city didn’t have much to do with that.

Here are some items that I would say improve SB: - Firing up the desal plant and required infrastructure to deliver the water. - Expediting the process for construction of ADUs, which increases the number of available units to rent/buy. (does not mean "affordable" .... just means that more people with $$$ can live here) - Hydration stations at Shoreline and Alameda Parks. - Converting the majority of downtown State Street to eliminate polluting vehicle traffic and making it pedestrian/bicycle friendly (have to say I don't like the racing cyclists who speed mercilessly through that area). - Converting local hotels to house homeless to provide some dignity in their lives. - Electing a mayor who, by all accounts, actually cares about all sectors of our city. - Increased number of world-class bicycle paths. - Allowing cruise ships to grace our shores and bring in badly needed jobs and money for businesses and city coffers. - Continued development of the Funk Zone. - Dog playground at MacKenzie Park. - Plans for a pool at Ortega Park. - Converting Plaza de Vera Cruz Park to a useable space.

I've lived here my whole life, over 50 years, and the past dozen years I see a lot of downfall with the town I used to adore and be so proud to be from. What's improved? The main positive that I can think of is how so many came together to save the Meadows. Looking forward to seeing others post things here that are positive!
